Tactiele tekeningen.

Tactile images.

In tangible or tactile images lines, dots and areas are presented in one or more layers of relief.
Tactile images often are indispensable to support an oral or written explanation to a blind person to clarify exactly:

  • the shape of something or the composition of for example a painting
  • how something is put together or how it works
  • how parts relate to each other in space

However until recently they were very little used in The Netherlands.
In the introduction you can read more.

International situation

Internationally there was a different situation. This is clear when you take a look at my report on the National Congress of Tactile Diagrams of 2005, organised by the RNIB. (Sorry, it is written in Dutch).
Before this event I had met Hoëlle Corvest, who became my guide and inspirator in this field. She was responsible for the accessibility of the collection and exhibitions of the Cité des Sciences et de l'industrie in Paris for visitors with a visual impairment .

Hoëlle in cooperation with the Louvre gave workshops to some 750 blind readers and as many people working in museums, teachers and designers. I participated in these workshops whenever possible.

In 2004 I cooperated with Hoëlle to translate Lagaffe Touch, an audio-tactile book explaining the visual language of comic strips to blind people, into Dutch. (Also available in English).

In 2008 we presented our vision on tactile images at the National Congress of Tactile Diagrams in Birmingham.

Examples

Every technique for the production of tactile images has its own (im)possibilities. More layers of relief and material that reveals more nuances tactilely mean better possibilities to convey more details.

Hoëlle in this respect had a real experimental garden in the Musée des Sciences.
Some of the projects she was involved in as an expert:

  • Des Clés pour bâtir (1991) (‘Building principles’)
  • Machine-Terre – Volcans et tremblements de terre (1997)
    (‘Earth-Machine – Vulcanos and earthquakes')
  • Les procréations (1998) (‘Reproduction and propagation’)
